East Adelaide School – Learning for Life

a

Curriculum

East Adelaide School provides a knowledge-rich, standards-based curriculum aligned to the South Australian Curriculum, designed with intention, coherence, and purpose so students know what they are learning, why it matters, and how to show quality.

Our learning is organised across the South Australian Curriculum learning areas:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Humanities and Social Sciences (History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship)
  • The Arts
  • Technologies
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Italian

Across these areas, students learn through purposeful inquiry and Learning Expeditions where appropriate, building deep understanding rather than covering content. We prioritise visible thinking, formative assessment, and feedback so students can explain their reasoning, reflect on progress, and improve work through critique and revision.

A key feature of our approach is Community of Inquiry, where students learn to think together through structured dialogue. In these sessions, students practise listening, asking questions, building on each other’s ideas, and using evidence to justify thinking. This strengthens reasoning, confidence, and respectful discussion habits that support learning across all subject areas.

Our Home Learning approach reflects the same values. Home learning is designed to be short, calm, and purposeful, centred around weekly guiding questions that invite family dialogue and thinking rather than completing large volumes of tasks. The aim is to strengthen curiosity, communication, and connection between home and school, without creating additional pressure for families.

Specialist teachers support learning in Science, Performing Arts, Physical Education, and Italian, working alongside classroom teachers to strengthen curriculum coherence and student engagement.

We also offer a range of enrichment and co-curricular opportunities that support student voice, teamwork, and excellence, which may include Debating, Maths Olympiad, Festival of Music Choir, and SAPSASA sport. Instrumental music lessons are available through the Department for Education Instrumental Music Service, and may also be accessed through approved private providers.

At East Adelaide School, our aim is for students to develop strong foundations in knowledge and skills, produce high-quality work they can be proud of, and grow as curious, capable learners who can use what they know in meaningful ways.
